Our History
Now in its fourth decade of providing professional faith-integrated counseling services to southeastern North Carolina, Wilmington CareNet Counseling Center was established in 1991 through a partnership with the Wilmington Baptist Association and the North Carolina Baptist Hospital. The agency has since maintained its affiliation with the hospital, which is now a division of Wake Forest Baptist Health.
In 1996 the hospital formed a wholly-owned subsidiary corporation known as CareNet, Incorporated. With a mandate "to operate, maintain, enhance, and continue development of the statewide network of outpatient counseling and pastoral care centers which have been developed by the Department of Pastoral Counseling of the Division of Pastoral Care of the hospital." In 1998 CareNet entered into a special affiliation agreement with The Samaritan Institute of Denver, Colorado, for purposes of receiving that organization's accreditation and consultation services.
Each pastoral counseling center affiliated with CareNet is sponsored locally by community, professional, and business leaders. A volunteer Executive Board is responsible for general oversight of the agency's operation. Specific responsibilities of the Board include strategic planning, development of church and community partnerships, and fundraising.
Wilmington CareNet currently operates in five locations, with the primary office being located in Wilmington within the Wilmington Baptist Association complex. A second office, initially incorporated in 1996 as Brunswick Counseling Services, is located within the Brunswick Baptist Resource Center in Supply, N.C. Additional branch offices have been established at Harbor United Methodist Church in Wilmington, and at Brunswick Family Medical in Shallotte, N.C..
ln September 2012 an office was established at the New River Baptist Association in Jacksonville, N.C. That location, near the Marine Corps Base at Camp Lejeune and the New River Air Station, prioritizes providing faith-integrated counseling services to veterans, active service military and their families.
Terry Tackett serves as Regional Director of Wilmington CareNet. Clinicians hold credentials offered by the state licensing boards which govern their respective disciplines, (professional counseling, marriage and family therapy, or clinical social work).
